Puerto Almanza

Lyle had been waiting for the drive to Puerto Almanza for the amazing views, and I’d been waiting for the good fresh seafood.  The views were great, especially with the dramatic gray clouds overhead.

The crab was good but overly complicated and salty.  I just wanted a pile of boiled crabmeat with a dash of lemon on top.  All the salty fancy fixings just ruin the taste of the crab, in my opinion.  I still maintain that Punta Arenas has the best fresh king crab for the most affordable price.

We came across a small one building schoolhouse with an interesting playground across the street.  The play equipment was painted all colorful and the ground was overgrown with little yellow wildflowers. It was such a cool setting for a playground with the rivers and the mountain ranges in the background.

After fooling around on the playground, we drove over to the homestead built at the mouth of the bay for dessert.

On our way back to Ushuaia, we stopped at a small lookout on the side of the road.  Hidden at the bottom of the slide down from the road was a picturesque little piece of land with a river that had been partly dammed by beaver activities.  Unfortunately, there wasn’t a beaver in sight.  Lyle wanted to come back either at dusk or dawn to maybe get a glimpse of a beaver, but that meant being out in the middle of the night. With the complications of having to check out that morning, we decided against that plan.
