Door County, Wisconsin

Ephraim, Wisconsin

After a nine hour drive from Cleveland, we arrived in Ephraim, just in time for the final fish boil of the night.

Local white fish is boiled along with potatoes and onions in a giant pot. After a while, the pot is doused in kerosene to boil off the extra oil sitting on top of the water. It's a Scandinavian tradition and something fun to go and see.

Lakeside seating, delicious food, and the perfect sunset. To top it off the meal ended with some delicious pie made with local cherries.

Sister Bay, Wisconsin

Our first morning in Door County we drove to Sister Bay to eat breakfast at Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant. Known for their Swedish pancakes and goats on the roof.

Yes goats on the roof!

Peninsula State Park

I was working during the days so we took advantage of the cool morning hours to explore Door County. Day number two began with a hike on Eagle Trail in Peninsula State Park.

This was a fun trail filled with rocky cliffs and caves. Similar to the Ledges Trail in Cuyahoga, but this one had the added bonus of a shore front walk.

We ended our hike on Eagle trail by climbing a 75 foot tower with incredible views across to Sister Bay.

Cave Point County Park

Another beautiful morning. This time we drove over to the east side of the peninsula to Cave Point County Park to watch the sunset.

There is a nice little trail along the east coast of Door County.

Whitehorse Sands State Park, the end of our hike for the day.

Road Trip Through Door County

Door County is full of places to stop while you're driving around. Lots of farms, markets, artsy places and food everywhere. Only one giant hay bale caterpillar though.

Our final day in Door County. The plan was to see as many lighthouses as possible and take the ferry to Washington Island. Lighthouse number one, Eagle Bluff Lighthouse.

The windy road to the Washington Island ferry. This would look incredible in the fall when the leaves are changing.

On the ferry to Washington Island. The skies were gloomy but it wasn't as cold as it looks.

Mountain Tower

Mountain tower. Nice views and the skies were clearing up a little bit.

Jackson Harbor Maritime Museum

The Jackson Harbor Maritime Museum. A nice little museum with a ton of local fishing history.

Interior of a historic fisherman's cabin.

I've never seen anything like this before. A Model A converted for snow.

Stavkirke Church

Stavkirke Church. Based on an old Norwegian church. This was a beautiful spot, set back in the woods surrounded by trails.

Cana Island

Back on the mainland. Our final stop in Door County was Cana Island for the last lighthouse of the day. There's a tractor that carries people across this dangerous passage. We just walked.

The Cana Island Lighthouse, built in 1869.

This side of the peninsula was a lot windier, and the waves were larger so it almost feels like you're on the ocean. You can see how important a lighthouse in this location would be especially on foggy days.

I don't know why, but the glass was covered in spiders. This would be a miserable experience if you're afraid of heights and spiders!
